Dr. Dyer had an interest in medicine early on and wanted to be a doctor from age 5 when he saw an episode of Marcus Welby, MD featuring Dr. Carl West, one of the first African-American surgeons in Omaha, Nebraska, where Dr. Dyer grew up. Although he excelled in his studies and was accepted into the University of Iowa’s pre-med program, he was discouraged by many from applying to medical school based on his race and lower economic status. He was selected for membership in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Dr. Billmeyer completed his residency training at UCLA Medical Center where he served as chief resident and then took a staff position in their urology department following completion of his training. Dr. Billmeyer has practiced urology at Beth Israel Hospital-NYU School of Medicine since 2000 and holds the position of associate professor of clinical urology, medicine, and microbiology & immunology there as well as a fellowship-trained specialist in oncologic reconstructive bladder surgery–a field in which he is an international authority and lecturer to surgeons from around the world
